Discrimination

Any of the following actions taken because of your race, color, national origin, religion, having children, a disability, age, or marital status are examples of discrimination:

  • Eviction

  • Refusal to rent to a person who meets the income requirements, credit check or other non-discriminatory criteria

  • Refusal to sell a house or provide the loans to buy a house to a person that meets the non-discriminatory criteria

  • False information regarding housing availability

  • Denial of an application for housing - Different terms or conditions in the housing lease

  • Preventing the use of any common area or facilities (like pools)

  • Discriminatory statements made about you or anyone else

  • Refusing to show you housing in a requested area, or telling you that you might prefer to live in an area because there are more people like you living there already

    • This practice is called steering. It is one of the most common forms of housing discrimination

  • Any interference, intimidation, or coercion of any person exercising their housing rights

  • Any form of harassment

    • This includes sexual harassment such as inappropriate comments, touching, or requesting/ demanding sexual favors

  • Persuading you to sell your house cheaply because another race or class of people have been moving into the area, and then that person resells that property for a profit

    • This practice is called blockbusting
